22 Mar DEED SCAMS STILL ALIVE AND WELL
If you have recently recorded a deed with the county clerk (and perhaps even if you haven’t), don’t be surprised if you get a letter that looks very official stating that they will provide you a copy of your deed (usually for a little more than $80). The ones we usually see are from South Dakota or California. Although this is not illegal, it is a scam since generally you can view a copy online. Furthermore, on the ones we have sent for recording, payment for recording (which includes return of the recorded deed to the client) has already been made – it just takes a while in the urban counties to return deeds. Even if you wanted to order a copy of the deed from the county, it would be nominal in price compared to the price of this scam.
