Attendees often ask questions about estate planning, probate, Medicaid and Veterans benefits. We proceed to answer the questions over the course of the workshop (although there will be a presentation also).

 

 
 

 

Michael B. Cohen will be speaking to the Dallas Police Department-NE Division at an event entitled “Wellness and Safety Event”  for seniors 50 plus, which will be held on July 18, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to noon at the Elks Club, 8550 Lullwater Drive, Dallas, Texas 75238. This is a free event to all who attend, and they are using the event to help recruit for “Volunteers In Patrol Teams”  in their neighborhoods to help reduce crime.

 

Michael B. Cohen will also be speaking on Tuesday, August 27, 2024 to P.E.O., a philanthropic organization supporting women’s education, at the Scottish Rite Hospital in Frisco, Texas.

Michael Jackson’s children tell grandmother to “beat it” in estate legal battle

 

The children of Michael Jackson (Paris, Prince and Bigi) are no longer talking with their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, as a result of her request for Jackson’s estate to pay her legal fees of over $500,000 when she unsuccessfully challenged the sale of the rights to Jackson’s songs.

 

 
 

 
 

Conflicting testimony as to common law marriage results in child inheritance of estate

 

If you don’t have a will or beneficiary designation of assets, inheritance is determined by state law which is called intestate succession. If the deceased was married at the time of death but has no will, then a surviving spouse will have some inheritance rights under Texas law. A determination of “common law or informal marriage” (when there is no marriage certificate) is made by a court or jury.

 

 
 

 

 

 

Two copies of gene found to be underlying cause in Alzheimer’s Disease - are you Destiny’s Child?

 

Researchers have found that people with 2 copies of the APOE4 gene is more than a risk factor – it is now considered an underlying cause of Alzheimer’s Disease. Prior to the research’s finding published in May, scientists knew the gene APOE4 increased risk. Although it is an underlying cause, it doesn’t mean if you have 2 copies of the gene that you are necessarily destined to have Alzheimer’s.

 

 
 

 
 

Texas Long-Term Care Partnership Program

 

As an incentive for Texans to get long-term care insurance (so the state through Medicaid would not have to pay as much for long-term care), Texas has a Long-Term Care Partnership Program (LTCP) which is a public-private partnership between state agencies (Texas Department of Health and Human Services and the Texas Department of Insurance) and private insurance providers to encourage individuals to plan for their long-term care needs.
